A client hits 225 pounds for eight reps on squat exactly as written. On paper, the session was perfect. In reality, the bar speed slowed sharply by rep five, technique drifted, and they needed three extra days before their next lower-body session felt productive.
That is the practical issue behind RIR vs percentage training. A percentage prescription can look precise while missing the variable that matters most in remote coaching: how difficult the load is for that client on that day. RIR can solve that problem, but it also creates a different one. It requires clients to understand effort and report it honestly.
For online coaches, the better question is rarely which system is universally superior. It is which system gives you enough structure to progress training while leaving enough room to respond to readiness, skill level, exercise selection, and real-life fatigue.
What percentage training does well
Percentage training prescribes load from a tested or estimated one-rep max. A coach might program five sets of three at 85% of a client’s squat 1RM, for example. It is easy to communicate, easy to standardize across a team, and highly useful when the goal is exposure to specific relative intensities.
That structure makes percentages particularly valuable for powerlifters preparing for competition. If a client needs repeated practice with heavy singles or doubles, percentages create a clear loading framework. They also work well with experienced lifters who have stable technique, recent max data, and a strong understanding of their own performance.
Percentages can simplify the client experience, too. The instruction is direct: load the bar, complete the work, log the result. For a large roster, that consistency can make programming and review faster than writing an entirely subjective plan for every movement.
The limitation is that a one-rep max is not a permanent measurement. A max tested six weeks ago may not reflect a client’s current capacity after poor sleep, travel, a calorie deficit, a new work schedule, or accumulated fatigue. Even the same percentage can feel dramatically different depending on the lift. Eighty percent for a high-bar squat and 80% for a deadlift do not necessarily produce the same effort or recovery cost.
Percentages also assume the estimated max is accurate. Many online clients test conservatively, avoid maximal attempts, or use rep-max calculators that become less reliable as reps rise. When the anchor is wrong, every percentage built from it is wrong.
How RIR changes the prescription
Reps in reserve, or RIR, estimates how many technically sound reps a client could have completed at the end of a set. A set of 10 at 2 RIR means the client finishes believing they had roughly two more quality reps available.
Instead of telling a client to perform 10 reps at 70%, you can prescribe 10 reps at 2 RIR. The load adjusts to the client’s actual readiness without requiring a new max test. If they are fresh, they may use more weight. If fatigue is high, the correct load may be lower while the intended stimulus remains intact.
This is why RIR has become so useful for hypertrophy, general strength, and remote coaching. Research on autoregulation, including work by Zourdos and colleagues, supports the practical value of adjusting loading to daily performance rather than treating a percentage as a fixed command. RIR also aligns with the coaching reality that hard, productive work is not always a specific number on a barbell.
For physique clients, RIR can be especially effective across machines, dumbbells, cables, and unilateral movements where one-rep-max percentages are inconvenient or meaningless. Asking for a leg press set of 12 at 1-2 RIR is more actionable than trying to calculate a percentage of a theoretical leg press maximum.
RIR is not magic, however. Newer trainees often misjudge proximity to failure. Some stop with five reps left and report 1 RIR. Others push beyond technical failure because they think every set must feel brutal. Exercise skill matters as well. A client may accurately judge effort on a leg extension but struggle to assess RIR on a complex squat variation.
RIR vs percentage training: the trade-off coaches need to manage
Percentage training prioritizes external precision. RIR prioritizes internal precision. Neither is automatically more scientific in every context.
Percentages answer, “What relative load do we want this client to practice?” RIR answers, “How hard should this set be today?” Those are related questions, but they are not identical. The best programming systems recognize when each question should lead.
Use percentage-based loading when technical specificity and exposure to heavy loads matter most. A powerlifter building toward a meet benefits from planned work at known intensities, especially on the competition lifts. A percentage range can also prevent an ambitious client from turning every session into a max-out attempt.
Use RIR when fatigue, exercise variety, and individual responsiveness matter more than hitting a predetermined load. It is often the more practical choice for hypertrophy blocks, post-diet transitions, busy professionals, clients returning from travel, and athletes training around unpredictable sport demands.
The hidden trade-off is coaching oversight. Percentages are easier to prescribe, but RIR requires better client education and better check-in data. If clients are not logging loads, reps, RIR, recovery, and performance notes, an autoregulated plan becomes difficult to evaluate. You have flexibility, but no reliable record of how that flexibility was used.
Build a hybrid system instead of picking sides
Most strong online programs do not need to choose one method exclusively. A hybrid approach gives clients a stable target while preserving an intelligent adjustment rule.
For example, program a squat top set of five at 78-82% with a target of 2 RIR. The percentage provides a sensible starting range based on the training phase. The RIR target tells the client whether to stay at the lower end, progress toward the upper end, or reduce load if the day is not there.
You can then use back-off work at a prescribed RIR, such as three sets of eight at 2-3 RIR. This is often more reliable than forcing the same percentage across multiple sets after the top set has revealed the client’s actual readiness.
For advanced strength athletes, consider percentage-based competition-lift exposures paired with RIR-guided accessory work. For general population and physique clients, lead with RIR for most exercises and use percentage ranges only where a tested max adds meaningful value.
This approach also makes deloads more intelligent. Rather than dropping every client to an arbitrary percentage on the same calendar week, monitor performance, soreness, motivation, sleep, and reported RIR. When loads that normally land at 2 RIR are suddenly reaching 0 RIR, the data is telling you something before a missed lift does.
Teach clients to use RIR accurately
RIR only works when the client can recognize a challenging, technically sound set. Do not assume they understand it because you placed “2 RIR” in the program.
Start with a simple definition: RIR is the number of good reps left, not the number of ugly reps possible. Encourage clients to film key compound lifts early in the coaching relationship. Compare their reported RIR with bar speed, range of motion, and technique so you can calibrate their judgment.
It helps to begin conservatively. For many newer clients, 3 RIR is easier to execute than 0-1 RIR and still produces productive training. As competence improves, you can introduce closer-to-failure sets selectively, especially on stable machine and isolation exercises where risk and technical breakdown are lower.
Your check-in process should also ask questions that make RIR useful: Did performance match the target? Did any exercise feel unusually heavy? Was the limitation muscular fatigue, conditioning, pain, or technique? These answers turn a subjective rating into coaching information.
Turn autoregulation into a scalable workflow
The business advantage of RIR is not simply that programs feel more personalized. It is that you can personalize decisions without rebuilding every plan from scratch each week.
Set progression rules before the program begins. If a client completes all prescribed reps above the target RIR, add load next session. If they hit the target, maintain or make a small planned increase. If they fall below the target RIR with form deterioration, hold or reduce the load and review recovery factors.
The key is to standardize the decision-making, not the exact weight every client uses. That gives you a repeatable system across a larger roster while preserving individual coaching judgment.
